Lois Knobler – An Artists Life

I was recently asked to photograph the work of Lois Knobler. The artist died in May of this year. Her Philadelphia home has housed most of her work and I was surprised to see just how much there was. Many rooms are full of her intriguing pieces of art. She is well known for her use of found objects in her work. The images I captured will be used in a book to celebrate her life. - Steve

To start with, a few shots showing her studio/storage…

I set up a studio in a bedroom close to the work, it was a slow process as many of the pieces were fragile and some more than 20 years old.

I felt certain works looked better on a black background.

There were many little items not necessarily finished works, just a collection Lois had planned to use one day.
